This easy air fryer prawn toast delivers all the crispy, savoury goodness of your favourite Chinese takeaway - but lighter, quicker and made at home. Golden sesame-crusted toast topped with flavour-packed prawn paste, crisped perfectly in the air fryer in minutes. 

The original recipe is from Cook Simply food blog.   

Years ago I made the traditional fried version and really fancied trying to cook them in the air fryer instead.   I'm glad I did...they turn out lighter and healthier than the fried version, the toast turns out lovely and crispy and the prawn topping is full of delicious flavour!

You'll love this recipe as it's ready in under 20 minutes, no deep frying is required and you'll end up with a great fakeaway alternative, that's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside...perfect party food!

Tips

  • Optional variations:
    • Spicy version - add chilli paste, sriracha or chopped fresh red chilli to the prawn mixture.
    • Extra aromatics - add finely sliced spring onions, chopped coriander or lime zest to the prawn mixture.
    • Bread swaps - try brioche for richness, thin cut sourdough or gluten-free bread.

Yes - it cooks quickly and becomes beautifully crisp without deep frying. 

How long does prawn toast take in the air fryer? 

Usually 6 to 8 minutes at around 180 to 190C, depending on your air fryer model. 

Can I use frozen prawns? 

Yes - defrost them fully and pat dry before finely chopping or blending. 

Why is my prawn toast soggy? 

Too much moisture in the prawns or overcrowding the air fryer basket. 

Can I prepare prawn toast in advance? 

Yes - prepare the prawn mixture and refrigerate, then assemble and air fry just before serving. 

Can you freeze prawn toast? 

Yes - freeze before cooking. Air fry from frozen, adding extra cooking time.

How to make these Easy Air Fryer Prawn Toast

Ingredients

  • 300g raw prawns, peeled, cleaned and finely chopped
  • 5g ginger, peeled and finely grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 tsp light soy sauce
  • 1 egg white
  • 4 slices white bread (I use thick sliced toastie bread)
  • 50g sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (or spray oil)

To serve (optional):

  • sweet chilli sauce
  • light soy sauce
  • 2 spring onions, finely sliced, to garnish

Instructions

  1. Put the finely chopped prawns into a bowl, then add the ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and egg white. Stir well to combine the ingredients.
  2. Spoon a quarter of the prawn mixture onto each slice of bread. Spread to ensure you get all the mixture to the edge of each slice.
  3. Put the sesame seeds onto a plate, take one of the slices of bread and place it prawn mixture side facing down so that the sesame seeds will stick to it. Repeat with the three other slices.
  4. Preheat the air fryer for 7 minutes at 200C. Using a knife, carefully slice the pieces of bread into four triangles.
  5. Carefully place the triangles into the air fryer. Make sure they're well-spaced apart - you may need to cook the toasts in 2 batches.
  6. Brush or spray vegetable oil over the top each prawn toast, then air fry at 190C for 8 minutes. Check after 5 minutes to ensure the toasts aren't burning. Depending on your model of air fryer, it's worth keeping an eye on it. If you like them crispy, 8 minutes should be fine!
  7. Serve either on their own or with a dipping sauce of your choice, and garnish with sliced spring onions.

  • Air fryer

Ingredients

  • 300 g (1 ¼ cups) raw prawns peeled, cleaned and finely chopped
  • 5 g (0.18 oz) ginger peeled and finely grated
  • 2 cloves garlic crushed
  • 1 tsp light soy sauce
  • 1 egg white
